Alexander McQueen Black Strapless Gown

Kate accompanied her husband and brother-in-law to the Sun Military Awards in December 2011 wearing a black velvet gown from Alexander McQueen. (left) It immediately drew comparisons to another black strapless gown with a ruffled sweetheart neckline worn by a young woman just entering the royal family, the Emmanuel gown worn by the then Lady Diana Spencer at her first official outing with Prince Charles. (right)

Kate's dress was a version of a ready to wear gown sold via the online designer fashion sale site net-a-porter for about $6,000(below). The original was obviously deemed inappropriate for a member of the royal family to wear to an official engagement, so the see-through chiffon skirt was replaced by a velvet one to match the bodice, and the low neckline trimmed with a narrow ruffle. With it, Kate wore diamond drop earrings and a handsome diamond and ruby necklace and bracelet, mentioned as a 'wedding gift from a family friend.'.

This recreation for the Franklin Mint vinyl Kate Middleton doll is in black velvet, with the bodice fully lined in white to prevent staining. The long bodice ends in a softly gathered full skirt and has a silk taffeta ruffle at the sweetheart neckline, and a small fishtail hem in back, as does the original. It closes in the back with a zipper. Included is a black clutch handbag and a faux 'diamond' bracelet in a geometric pattern similar to the original. Necklace and earrings are NOT included, but a similar set to the one Kate wore is available from Facets by Marcia.Shoes are from the Franklin Mint Kate Middleton Engagement Doll.
