For the commemoration at Portsmouth in June 1994 of the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings (much of which had embarked from there), Diana chose a naval themed outfit, based on a Catherine Walker navy and white coatdress. She would be surrounded at the ceremony by men in naval uniforms, from officers (left) - her husband, for one, and her brother-in-law, Princess Anne's husband Lt. Comdr. Timothy Laurence, for another - to regular sailors (below), and she blended right in. The dress was appropriately nautical in colors, had a military-looking braided frog closure, and she wore a military badge set in diamonds (I believe it's the badge of the Princess of Wales' Regiment, of which she was colonel in chief). She accessorized it in more blue and white - sapphire earrings, navy clutch bag, navy gloves, big brimmed navy hat by Philip Sommerville, and a favorite pearl choker.
Except for the loss of the regimental badge and a change of earrings and pearl choker, she wore the same outfit a month later to the wedding of Princess Margaret's daughter, Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones, and Daniel Chatto. |
This reproduction for the Franklin Mint Diana, the People's Princess doll is primarily in navy linen. The coatdress is navy linen with white silk collar and cuffs. It's fully lined in white, and features a navy frog closure (which may not show well in the photo), like the original, underneath which are snaps. The hat is also navy linen, lined in white, and features a wired brim. It doesn't show in the photo, but it also has a crinkled satiny ribbon and large bow in the back. Also includes a navy pleather purse with gold tone accents. The shoes are all from S'n E. The all-'pearl' choker and 'pearl' earrings are from the Inspecting the Guard Outfit, the choker with clasp from the Grey Suit Outfit, and the 'sapphire' earrings from the White Lace Gown Outfit. The brooch is a repurposed earring from the Franklin Mint Jackie doll - and none of the jewelry is included. Navy gloves available separately from Dollsecrets. (There are a lot of really great details to this - the frog closure, the hat, the bag - but sadly they don't really show up well in the photographs, for which I apologize. If you'd like to see them, please contact me and I'll send lighter ones, which show details but don't accurately show the color of the dress). |
