'Prince of Wales' Check Suit

fits Franklin Mint Diana Portrait Doll

Diana bought this suit early in 1997, from John Galliano's first full collection for the house of Dior. It was, fittingly, in a fabric called a Prince of Wales check. It came with three pieces, the jacket, a skirt, and trousers, and Diana was seen wearing it both ways.

With the skirt, she was at St. Mary's hospital in Paddington, in April of 1997, for the pediatric intensive care unit.

She wore it with the pants to lunch with her stepmother, Raine (far left). Diana and her siblings famously hated the stepmother they called 'Acid Raine', literally moving her belongings out of Althorp the day Diana's father was buried. However, as Diana started building a new life after her separation, she attempted to reach back into her past to confront and take responsibility for broken relationships, particularly those in which she felt she had acted badly. One of those reconciliations was with her stepmother, and from 1993 until her death they lunched regularly. This caused some resentment with her siblings and, particulary, her mother.

This recreation consists of three pieces (jacket, skirt, and trousers) in a similar wool check. The jacket features fringe trim on the lapels and collar, flared cuffs, faux pockets, nickel plated stud 'buttons' that hide a snap closure, and is fully lined. The skirt is also fully lined, fastens with snaps, and has hangar loops. The trousers have a small pleat front and are unlined.
