Catherine Walker Black and White Cocktail Dress
fits Franklin Mint Diana Portrait Doll
| When Diana auctioned off 79 of her dresses for charity in 1997, this was Lot 38, described as "a nautically-inspired cocktail dress of black and white ribbed silk", and fetched $36,800. She wore it in 1992, in her capacity as president of the Royal Marsden Hospital, to attend Liza Minelli’s tribute to Sammy Davis Jr. at the Royal Albert Hall in June, and again a few months later, in September, at a performance at Sadler's Wells by the British Youth Opera, of which she was patron. Although a Catherine Walker creation, at the time it was attributed by some (for one, 'Hello!' magazine) to Tomasz Starzewski, probably because the striped skirt was similar to the pleated ones that he was then famous for.

This recreation for the Franklin Mint vinyl People’s Princess doll consists, like the original, of a striped black and white skirt and black jacket white cuffs, and is in polyester satin. The jacket features 2 rows of white textured stud ‘buttons’ on the front and cuffs, and both jacket and skirt are fully lined in white to prevent staining. Includes black clutch evening bag. Shown with the earrings from the Inspecting the Guard outfit, and shoes and hose from the Princess of Glamour doll. |
