Zandra Rhodes Chiffon Dress

fits Franklin Mint Diana Portrait Doll

Zandra Rhodes was an unconventional and edgy designer, a textile artist first who then designed her clothes around the fabric, and she herself said it was a "daring" move when Diana wandered into her shop in the spring of 1985, accompanied by Sarah Ferguson (who Diana was then matchmaking with Prince Andrew). Diana was drawn to some pieces from her new collection called "India Revisited", which a contemporary newspaper review described as "richly ornamented style, all airy, buoyant and romantic", one of them a floaty off the shoulder beaded chiffon dress in black with a fluorescent pink "buttons and bows" print. Sadly, probably remembering the dressing down she received about wearing a black gown on her first engagement with Prince Charles, she told the designer she couldn't wear black. A color change to pale pink solved the problem.

Diana wore the dress most famously on the Wales' trip to Japan in May of 1986 (left), and there is some report that the pink color was chosen to echo that of cherry blossoms, but she first wore it in July of 1985 to a Torvill and Dean Ice Show Gala in aid of “Help the Hospices” at Wembley. This may have been a cost-saving measure on the part of her husband - if worn on as part of a foreign tour wardrobe it would have been paid for by the government's Foreign Office, and not Charles.

In June 1986 she wore it to a charity concert at the Tetbury Parish Church (which was the 'home' church to Highgrove House) in aid of the Malcom Singer Cancer Fund, of which she was patron. In June of 1987 she wore it again when she and Prince Charles attended an evening of entertainment in aid of London City Ballet (of which she was patron) at Charleton Manor in East Sussex ( above right), and in May of 1989 to a Newspaper Society dinner and ball at the London Hilton Hotel.(below right)

When Diana auctioned 79 of her gowns for charity in 1997, this was Lot 47, described as "a mid-length formal dinner dress in pink chiffon", and fetched $27,600. It was purchased by Maureen Scripps (of the publishing family) and was part of the Pink Ribbons charity exhibit of various Diana outfits. It was auctioned in London in 2011 and bought by Historic Royal Palaces at Kensington Palace for about $35,000.

The basis for this recreation for the Franklin Mint vinyl People’s Princess doll is the dress from the Limited Edition Artist Doll "Pink Fairy Tale" Gwen McNeil 28" doll. I deconstructed the dress and either recut or remade parts using their dress. Because this was designed for a much larger doll the scale of the print is incorrect for the Franklin Mint Diana but I've done my best with it. The bodice is lined in pink polyester, the skirt is sheer. Features the ruched hip 'bustle' look and belt of the original. Fastens in the back with snaps. Earrings are from the Light Blue Suit outfit, shoes by SnE.

(Because this was cut from another doll dress there is no more material, no more can be made.)
