Catherine Walker loved pearls on her gowns, feeling that their luster enhanced the typical English complexion. She put them to use on this pink chiffon gown, worn for Diana's trip to Pakistan in October 1991 (left). The bodice of the gown is embroidered in pearls in a paisley pattern and has a sarong-style skirt, and to honor the fashion of the host country, the designer added a pink chiffon stole in the style of the Pakistani dupatta. Diana first wore this gown in November of 1990 on the Wales trip to Japan for the enthronement of Emperor Akihito (below). In April 1991, as Patron of Help the Aged, she wore it to a banquet for the launch of its Re Action Trust, and in June to a Philharmonia concert with Prince Charles, Patron, at Hampton Court. 1992 saw two appearances - in April at a gala performance by the Kirov Ballet in aid of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and in December, attending the Royal Variety Performance with Prince Charles on their last public engagement together (right). When Diana auctioned 79 of her gowns for charity in 1997, this was Lot 9, described as "a sarong-style evening dress in pink chiffon", and fetched $51,750. It was purchased by Pamela and Mark Henn, Disney animators, who bought it in memory of a young fan of the Disney princesses whom they befriended, and who had recently died of brain cancer. It was exhibited in her honor at the Kent State University Museum in 1998 . News stories indicate it was then scheduled to be auctioned again in May of 2006 on e-Bay, but it appears that either didn't materialize or it wasn't sold, as a year later Henn was noted as the owner when the gown was part of the 2007 'Diana, Princess of Wales: Dresses for a Cause' exhibit. |
