Another trusty Catherine Walker coatdress for another foreign tour - this time it's Diana's solo tour of Egypt in the spring of 1992 (left, visiting the temples at Karnak). It was made in silk dupioni, which would hold up to the heat and humidity, and in a color Walker thought would fit in with the desert setting of Egypt. Unfortunately, it fit in too well, and photographers complained that Diana blended into the background and made for rather dull pictures. Diana was under more stress than usual on this trip - as one of her first solo tours, she felt it was important for her to do well in order to show that she could be an independent ambasadress for Britain. She also knew that the Andrew Morton book she had collaborated with would be published soon, and there would be inevitable fallout to endure. And it didn't help that her husband tagged along on both the outward and return flights as far as Turkey, where he left her to take a private vacation. Her private secretary Patrick Jephson felt that emphasized how alone she had become, and was not surprised when she burst into tears on the flight down. But as usual, once 'on the job' she never put a foot wrong She also wore this dress earlier (right), on a day engagement to Blackpool in 1991. |
