"The whole world", Diana once complained during her first pregnancy, "is watching my stomach". Helping her cope with looking chic during a difficult pregnancy was, of course, Catherine Walker. Another of her maternity dresses was worn to Diana's first visit to the Cornish Scilly Isles in late spring 1982 (above left). Theoretically a private visit to a place where she, as Duchess of Cornwall, would in future occasionally vacation with Charles and her boys (he had a private villa there), this dress was chosen for a visit to Tresco Abbey, presumably so Charles, with his interest in horticulture, could enjoy its famous gardens. The dress, which had a fitted bodice and an empire waist instead of just voluminous gathers falling from the neckline, was slightly different from most other of the designer's maternity dresses that Diana chose. Diana wore this dress several other times in March and April of 1982, although because of the chilly spring, it was usually hidden under coats, such as at the Cheltenham Cup on March 18 (below left, with her grandmother Lady Fermoy, the neckline is just visible underneath the coat), and a few days later with Prince Charles on a day engagement in Huddersfield. She must have liked the style, since she had an identical one in blue silk. As usual with Diana, when an outfit worked for her, it stayed. When she was pregnant with Prince Harry 2 years later she wore this dress again ( upper right, at the Chelsea Flower Show in May 1984: lower right, leaving London for a weekend visit to Prince Philip's extended family in Frankfurt, a month later)), as it seems to have fitted in nicely with the slimmer maternity silhouette she then favored. |
