Diana wore this black velvet and blue lame gown in October 1986 to a benefit entitled 'Starlight Cabaret' in her capacity as patron of Help the Aged. She also wore it that same month for a formal portrait by the photographer Terence Donovan (right) Donovan was a unusual choice for royal portraits, as he was known primarily as a fashion and celebrity photographer. However, Diana's brother-in-law Prince Andrew, himself a keen amateur photographer, liked his work, and had commissioned Donovan for the official engagement portraits of himself and Sarah Ferguson. Diana liked those so much that when she wanted some new portraits a few months later, it was Donovan that she invited to Kensington Palace. |
This recreation for the Franklin Mint vinyl Princess Diana doll feaures a bodice made of black microsuede, with collar and skirt of royal blue lame. The bodice is lined in white, the skirt is unlined. It closes in the back with snaps. Shown with the earrings from the Princess of Style doll and shoes from the Princess of Glamour. (The lame is actually darker than it appears in the photograph, as the flash washed out the color. I apologize.) |
