By the designer Roland Mouret from his ready to wear line in 2016, it was in black and white stretch crepe with a flared hem and had been slightly customized. The original had sheer panels in the back, which were replaced for Kate with the gown fabric. Because Kate buys a lot of generally available - albeit pricey - ready to wear clothes (in fact, a version of this was also made for Neiman Marcus) rather than having items custom made, to avoid the risk of showing up at an event with someone else wearing the same thing she usually waits a year or so before wearing an item. This was probably a good idea, as Queen Maxima of the Netherlands wore an almost identical version in 2017. It's likely that by the time the event Kate had planned this for was at hand, the COVID pandemic lockdowns had started, and by the time she was seen wearing it the gown was no longer available, and in fact the label had declared bankruptcy. |
