Provencal Quilted Tote Bag

for Franklin Mint Diana Portrait Doll

In the early years of her public life, Diana often was seen at casual occasions - particularly Charles' polo matches - carrying quilted tote bags from the Fulham Road store of Souleaido, makers of quilted casual floral-printed handbags from Provence. "The Princess of Wales bought five of their 'sacs magaridos'-- quilted bags -- all in different designs . . . which she often took with her when she went to watch Prince Charles playing polo. 'She liked roses'." ( The Royal Shopping Guide, p. 69) This one was a particular favorite - she was first spotted with it at a Cowdray Park polo match in the summer of 1981 (before her marriage), at another polo match (left) just a few weeks before the birth of Prince William, and she was still carrying it to such events in 1983. (right). The bag is still available on the Souleaido web site.
This recreation, shown with my version of the maternity dress, is made from specially printed cotton fabric from Sylvia Braden. It it quilted all over, and lined with white cotton. The attached printed straps are unquilted and unlined.
