We joined the
Or how we became Slovenian for only $33.00 each!
It's kinda like the joke about the guy
who wanted to be polish.
You know, the one that ends with the punch line
"Momma Mia!"
It must have been about 1961 that
"Gus" (Evelyn Sabol) said; "My Dad says there's only two kinds of people in
this world. Slovenians, and those who wish they were Slovenian!"
And y'know I must have used that line a
thousand times since then, 'cause it came to ring true to me. I was adopted, and raised by
a Slovenian step-grandfather, Andy
Macek who was a wonderful man. He had played some banjo in his youth, and there was
always Polka music in our home.
Long before I could play an instrument I knew the words, and tunes to dozens of Yankovic, Pecon, and Vadnal
Polkas, and Waltzes.
When Rock & Roll came along in the mid '50s I took up the Guitar.
I bought a Banjo around 1960 during the Folk Era, figuring I could use it for Kingston
Trio type stuff.
By '63 or so, I was playing in bands, and when an ocasional Polka job came along, I could
double on banjo. Polka jobs were always lots of fun, and the musicians were always treated
much better than on the other jobs I was playing. It gradually dawned on me that Gus's Dad
was right.
I wished I was Slovenian!
So the other night I did something about it.
Suzie & I joined the Slovenian-American Club, and soon I'll have a Membership Card. I
figure that'll make me an official, card carrying, Slovenian!
Don't you wish YOU were Slovenian?
